This project involved the replacement of a dated and problematic chilled water system that serves the process equipment at Valspar Coatings in Lawrence, Kansas. All existing process equipment was to remain operational throughout construction. Therefor, a new chilled water system was systematically installed parallel with the existing system. The system included (2) 125 ton air-cooled chillers with variable primary and variable secondary piping loops. A remote chiller evaporator barrel was included due to extremely low chilled water temperature and low ambient temperature at which the system operated. A main condensate duplex pump and basin were replaced at the power plant with new to allow condensate to pump from the tunnel space up to the existing main condensate receiver in the power plant.
The existing unistrut pipe supports were replaced in the majority of the tunnel with new structural steel pipe support racks. Several pipe anchor supports were installed throughout to appropriately contain the large forces associated with expansion and contraction within the piping systems.
All work was completed with no downtimes of the existing steam and steam condensate distribution systems to the Facility, allowing continual operation of all required process and building heating loads when needed.
Heritage Park is a 1,200 acre park located in Olathe, Kansas. This new maintenance facility includes locker rooms, restrooms, a break room,
conference room, secure parts storage room, communications equipment, offices, and truck bays.
A fresh air system ensures a code-compliant and ventilated environment for the workers who are maintaining the trucks and equipment. Typical condensing type furnaces with R-410a refrigerant air conditioning temper the occupied areas. The site and surrounding parking areas have security lighting that allows the vehicles to maneuver during early morning snow removal and emergency conditions.
