Topeka Performing Arts Center
This project transformed a 1939 municipal auditorium into a state-of-the-art performance hall. Instead of basketball games, circuses with elephants and a flat-floor theatre, an art-deco restoration/retrofit produced a sloped floor performance hall with theatre seating that caters to choral concerts, stage productions, orchestra performances and musical acts of all kinds.
With no significant mechanical/electrical renovation for 50 years, the challenge was to revise the entire solution without jeopardizing the project budget. New air pathways, equipment and control systems allowed for environmental control of all situations. Electrical and communications upgrades replaced aging equipment including stage lighting, dimming, sound reinforcement and show power connections.
Lawrence Arts Center
The Lawrence Art Center includes a full range of arts-related spaces, including performance
and community forum spaces, galleries, exhibit spaces, studios, teaching environments and even an arts-based preschool. LSA provided heating, cooling, plumbing, lighting, and power distribution
design as well as construction administration.
Boilers for building heating and chillers for building cooling are provided. Hot water and chilled water is piped to air handling units located in mechanical rooms throughout the building.
Bales Organ Recital Hall - University of Kansas
This project involved the design of a new organ recital hall built around a Hellmuth Wolff Opus 40 organ. Bales Organ Recital Hall adjoins with the Lied Center of Kansas located at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Special temperature controls were used to maintain the hall at a constant 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 50% humidity to protect the organ's wood components. Every aspect of the building was also designed to provide optimal acoustics for the organ.
Topeka Civic Theatre and Academy
The Topeka Civic Theater and Academy purchased the old Gage Elementary School from USD 501 and a major addition was added to house the new owner. The original structure was also renovated. LSA provided the HVAC, lighting, power, and fire protection design for the renovated building and new addition.
