Firm History
  • Latimer, Sommers and Associates, P.A. is a consulting engineering firm with over 50 years of experience in the design of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, telecommunications, and environmental systems. The focus of the firm has always been putting the client relationship first, focusing on the needs of the client, and being creative with design solutions. Typical projects are facilities that include healthcare and medical, judicial and correctional, educational, office, retail, multi-family, religious, military, institutional, industrial, recreational, and others.

  • LSA’s present association was founded in 1987 as the successor of two previous firms dating back to 1954. Professional engineers in the firm are licensed in 26 states and perform services in at least 15 of those each year. LSA’s design studio philosophy is to have each engineer qualified to perform both mechanical and electrical design for each project and carry it from the initial contact, through design, construction and commissioning. This generates superior design consistency and coordination while reinforcing design solutions with on-site interaction with contractors. An extremely thorough drafting staff translates the engineer’s concepts into consistent, easy-to-read construction documents which are the key to reliable bids and clarity for the constructor.

  • LSA has received many industry and peer-review awards such as the First Annual Governor’s Award for New Product Design in Kansas, several lighting design awards, and has produced LEED-certified facilities. Energy Management and Control Corporation (EMC²), a subsidiary of LSA, provides alternative energy systems design and energy management services, and has been honored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Governor of Kansas under the National Awards Program for Energy Innovation.

  • The best barometer of the firm is its longevity and the realization that there is a focus on the people, not just the facility.

  • Dedication and Philosophy

Innovation, outside the box, cutting edge. These are terms that are heard in the industry and we at Latimer, Sommers and Associates use them, but wisely, with scrutiny, and with sound judgment. Our approach to mechanical and electrical systems has made us the “go-to guy”. When there is a challenge to be met, there is no one in the industry that can bring to bear the qualifications, the creativity, the history within our team. With access to our subsidiary, Energy Management and Control Corporation, which gives direct input to the field commissioning issues of systems, the 50-year breadth of experience, the diversity of design approaches, and evolving technology, LSA solves problems. Whether it’s an existing facility or a new adventure for a client, each project is a prototype, there are no preconceived answers. We are dedicated to find the best solution.

  • Tools of the trade. We pride ourselves on creating documents that are clear, correct, and of course, on time. This requires CAD software and a dedicated staff of technicians who are dedicated to producing quality work…even when it means taking the extra time, and not hitting the “easy button”. Our priority is having the best hardware, software, and training to deliver the best package.

  • Commitment. Responsive. Make it happen. LSA provides services which are responsive and exceptional. Principals serve in a major design role. Each engineer can take advantage of the years of knowledge and wide range of experiences that his or her colleague has. This encourages a diverse set of solutions that are time-tested. It creates a consistent level of quality that carries through the decades and that clients can count on.

  • The Big Picture, Total Coordination. Our engineers, from Senior Partner to first year graduate handle projects and all systems from beginning to end. This provides feedback from the field to incorporate into design. Our engineers perform engineering. Drafting is performed by our CAD Department.
