Winfield Correctional Facility - Primary Electrical System Improvements
This project was phased over a five-year period. The first phase included design of the new primary electrical distribution system, development of specifications for the pre-purchase of the major equipment, and development of the plans required to provide direction to the institution's maintenance staff to allow them to construct the duct bank portion of the new primary electrical system. LSA provided assistance during the construction of the duct bank and subsequently developed plans for bidding of the work required to complete the primary electrical portion of the project once the duct bank was constructed. This phase involved installation of the transformers, pad-mounted primary switches and primary conductors.

The Winfield Correctional Facility is constructed on a site with rock existing in very close proximity to finished grade. If the primary electrical distribution system had been installed at normal depths, installation costs would have been very high. LSA worked closely with representatives of the Department of Corrections and the Division of Facilities Management to develop a design using a concrete encased duct bank located close to finished grade, the top of which became sidewalks for the Institution.

The final phase involved installation of secondary conductors and service disconnect switches for each respective building service and the connection of the new respective building service to the existing main distribution panels within each building.

This project impacted two different institutions, each a part of a different agency in the State of Kansas: the Department of Corrections (the Winfield Correctional Facility) and the Kansas Veteran's Administration (the Kansas Veteran's Home).
