Emporia State University - Student Recreation Center
This project involved the mechanical and electrical design of the new student recreation facility for Emporia State University. The Center contains three recreational basketball courts that can be transformed into three volleyball courts. The open gymnasium also functions for indoor soccer and football, and features a three-lane running track around the perimeter of the room. Also contained within the center are a weight room for free-weights and weight machines, and an aerobic exercise room. Both rooms are lined with mirrors and feature generous windows for natural light and ventilation. Exercise equipment is located in a large room with a curved exterior wall featuring large windows for pleasant view across the campus. In the center of the facility is a generous commons area for students to socialize and meet friends. The commons area features large-screen televisions, vending machines, and seating areas under suspended ceiling clouds. At the entrance to the Center are student lockers, a large circular reception desk, a control gate, and offices and counseling rooms. Visual control of the entrance and interior of the building from the reception desk is a key element of the building plan. Emig and Associates provided architectural design, construction documents, and construction observation services for this project.
