USD 501 - Topeka West Gymnasium
A continuation of gymnasium upgrades for the Topeka 501 school district, this was an addition to the existing athletic spaces in this central building on the campus. Locker rooms, a concession area, restrooms, storage, and support spaces flanked the main gym space. Each having their own environmental needs, each received individual mechanical systems. The numerous basketball goals, volleyball standards, net partitions, and the structure itself required a team effort for ductwork and luminaire coordination. The high space requirement necessitated lighting that had the power to create the proper level of illumination and not create hot spots or glare for the athletes. Exterior accent lighting enhances the translucent entry canopies and gives pedestrians an entrance focal point, which was a directive from the owner. LSA had added air conditioning to the entire campus just a couple years earlier as well as power upgrades that would allow this addition to occur as well as others. This recent knowledge allowed the proper water, waste, power, fire alarm, and data connections to occur within the tunnel systems without surprises during the construction phase. Modifications were made to existing air intakes at the building connection point to ensure the existing facility systems’ functions were kept intact.
