NE Jr High Place
This project involved the restoration and renovation of a 1923 junior high school in a challenged Kansas City neighborhood into apartments for elderly residents. This project received the 2009 Award of Excellence by the Kansas Preservation Alliance for outstanding restoration. Classrooms were transformed into 47 studio, one and two bedroom apartments with support spaces, office and meeting areas. Challenges included not only restroing the building that had been abandoned for five years, but preserving its detail and character while adding extensive plumbing, fire protection, HVAC, and electrical systems in the four story brick and stone structure. Each unit was separately metered and had individual control of its environment.
